Jude Bellingham, the England midfielder, acknowledged that the team didn’t perform at their peak during their World Cup qualifying match against Albania on Friday night.
In the 2-0 victory, Myles Lewis-Skelly marked his debut with a goal, alongside captain Harry Kane also finding the net.
“We had a clear idea of what we wanted to achieve and how we intended to play,” Bellingham stated. “We aimed to adhere to that as closely as possible. I understand it’s challenging when facing a side that defends so deeply and maintains a compact shape.
“At times, the game can go in unexpected directions. We wanted to control the ball and draw them out, but overall, we stuck to our strategy quite well. We had a solid week of training, and it’s a positive way to kick off this new chapter.”
The Real Madrid midfielder also shared some kind words for debutant Lewis-Skelly, who scored in his inaugural outing for the national team.
“He made an excellent run, and I was able to find him with a pass,” Bellingham explained. “He finished it off brilliantly, and I’m really pleased for him.
“What a fantastic first game, with a well-executed goal and securing the win. It’s a moment he’ll cherish forever, and we’re thrilled for him.”
“When stepping into the squad, there are many lads around to support you. We hope that for him, he only needs to focus on his own mindset and staying cool, which he certainly has in abundance. We did everything we could to ensure he enjoyed the experience, and I think he did.”
