Barcelona defender Jules Kounde has voiced his frustration regarding being compelled to compete against Osasuna in a LaLiga match on Thursday, which had been rescheduled despite both clubs requesting it not take place.
Hansi Flick’s side emerged victorious with a 3-0 win, extending their lead at the top of the table to three points. However, Kounde expressed that the decision to schedule the match on this date showed a profound disrespect towards both the clubs and the players involved.
Following the initial postponement of the match on March 8 due to the tragic passing of a doctor at the Catalan club, Barcelona and Osasuna appealed against the decision to play on Thursday, yet their concerns were disregarded.
“I’m quite frustrated about the timing of the match; it doesn’t seem right,” Kounde told DAZN.
“I realise that some may find it difficult to grasp, and we are fortunate to be in this profession… yet I believe it’s disrespectful to the club to organise the match on this date.”
“It doesn’t matter if it’s Barcelona or Osasuna—they too have internationals who haven’t had the necessary rest.”
Kounde played a grueling 120 minutes for France on Sunday in the Nations League against Croatia, who featured Osasuna’s Ante Budimir.
“It could be Barcelona, Osasuna, or Real Madrid; there is a clear lack of respect not only for the clubs but also for the players,” the French defender continued.
“They need to recognise that we are not machines. To perform at our best and give our fans what they deserve, rest is essential.”
“I believe all sporting organisations, not just LaLiga, need to take this into account.”
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick also expressed his displeasure after midfielder Dani Olmo sustained an injury during the match.
“As I’ve mentioned previously, this isn’t the appropriate date for hosting this match, especially after an international break,” Flick stated to reporters.
“We may have gained three points, but we’ve paid a significant price with Dani’s injury.”
“It’s concerning, and we’re uncertain about how long he will be sidelined.”
