Celtic are anxiously awaiting news on the condition of Kasper Schmeichel, who may have sustained a shoulder injury with the potential to sideline him for an extended duration.
The Danish international appeared to injure his shoulder while landing awkwardly during a head-to-head challenge with Bernardo Silva, who was surging towards goal in Denmark’s 5-2 defeat to Portugal in Lisbon on Sunday night.
The incident took place in the first half of extra time, but Danish national coach Brian Riemer had already utilised all six of his substitutions. As a result, Schmeichel persisted through the discomfort and remained on the pitch for the rest of the match.
On Monday, Schmeichel was seen wearing a sling at Lisbon airport and was taken to hospital immediately after the match, accompanied by national team doctor Morten Boesen, for further assessment. While X-rays showed no damage, Schmeichel is set to undergo an MRI scan to determine the extent of his injury.
Riemer commented, “If it had been an option, I would have substituted Kasper Schmeichel because of his injury, but we had already exhausted all our substitution opportunities.”
“We discussed the possibility of replacing Schmeichel, but he was adamant about staying on. Keeping 11 players on the field was beneficial for us. The alternative would have left us with only nine outfield players if we took him off.”
