Simon Goodwin has stirred the rumour mill regarding Max Gawn, following some peculiar post-match remarks that have put the Melbourne skipper in the spotlight.
The 33-year-old was outclassed by Tristan Xerri during the Demons’ disappointing 125-66 defeat to North Melbourne on Sunday, which was a lacklustre performance all around.
Gawn found it difficult to handle Xerri, who recorded 20 disposals and a goal.

While one might attribute it to just a poor outing, Gawn’s coach made some thought-provoking remarks during his post-match press conference when quizzed about the seasoned player’s performance.
“Our people mean a lot to us, and Max is certainly one of them,” Goodwin remarked.
“He’ll recognise that he was up against a formidable opponent – but you also have to acknowledge that life can be complicated.
“We stand by Max. He is an outstanding individual and a tremendous leader. Every player’s performance has a backstory, and we take great pride in Max.”
“He will undoubtedly remain a pivotal leader for this footy club.”
When prompted to clarify what issues Gawn was facing, Goodwin declined to elaborate.

Simon Goodwin addresses the media following round two. AFL
“I’m not going to delve into specifics,” he stated.
“There’s football, and then there’s life, and we must recognise that everyone has their own journey, and he’s someone we deeply care about.
“He will certainly play a crucial role in our response.”
Goodwin’s eyebrow-raising comments ignited discussions on social media, with numerous critics claiming the coach was exacerbating speculation surrounding Gawn’s personal matters.
“I have great respect and admiration for Max Gawn,” veteran journalist Neil Mitchell expressed on X.
“I just wish his coach wouldn’t draw focus to his private life. It’s not our concern, whatever he might be hinting at. Max had an off game. Let’s leave it at that.”
Melbourne has suffered defeats in their opening two matches of the season and will meet Gold Coast in round three.
