What lies ahead for Melbourne Victory’s Ryan Teague after his standout debut for the Subway Socceroos? An overseas transfer may be on the horizon, according to A-Leagues icon Alex Brosque.
Teague became a focal point on this week’s episode of Total A-League following his impressive inaugural performance for the Socceroos during their 2-0 victory over China in a 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night.
The 23-year-old midfielder showcased his talents under the mentorship of former Victory coach Tony Popovic, seamlessly fitting into the match before a sizeable crowd in China, as Australia edged closer to the prestigious tournament next year in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
“There were doubts regarding his selection for the squad, and then the fact that he was starting, but he was outstanding. For me, he was the man of the match, showing no signs of nerves,” Brosque commented on this week’s Total A-Leagues, just before Saturday’s Original Rivalry clash between Victory and Adelaide United.
“Having a player like (Jackson) Irvine beside him was beneficial. Teague noted in the post-match that the calibre of players were constantly encouraging him, which helped him feel comfortable.”

Brosque continued: “His confidence and courage in seeking the ball and driving it forward was remarkable. In that first game against Indonesia, we had struggled a bit with penetrating the middle; we needed someone like him to link up with our wingers and facilitate overlapping runs from the full-backs.”
“Whether it was (Martin) Boyle cutting inside or others looking to support from the flanks, Teague did well to turn and connect, kick-starting our attacks. His bravery and composure on the ball were evident.”
“There were moments he appeared in a tough spot, yet he calmly found his way out, which is exactly what we lacked in the first match against Indonesia. We were too often on the back foot and needed someone like Teague to gain possession and push us forward, and that was what impressed me the most.”

Teague, a product of Sydney FC’s youth academy, has hardly put a foot wrong since returning to the pitch for Melbourne Victory in the 2023-24 season after a stint overseas.
The talented Australian has made a name for himself as one of the standout midfielders in the league during his time at AAMI Park.

“Having witnessed his talent throughout his youth career with Sydney, it was clear he was destined to be special,” Brosque reminisced. “Seeing him shine in Melbourne Victory colours is bittersweet, but it’s fantastic for the national team.”
“Working with Popovic has served as a solid foundation for him. Hopefully, this leads him towards an exciting career overseas.”

Teague was not the sole Melbourne Victory player who made an impact for the Socceroos during the international window.
Nishan Velupillay found the back of the net against both Indonesia and China, amassing three goals in five appearances since his debut for Australia in October.
Sydney Morning Herald journalist and host of Total A-Leagues, Vince Rugari, remarked: “Many raised doubts about his selection, myself included. ”
“I genuinely feel pleased to have been proven wrong, as Popa made the right call, particularly in the match against Indonesia.”
“I admire how he handled this situation, Brosque. In the past, we’ve seen Aussie players falter in similar scenarios, but he exhibited incredible composure.”
“We’ve noticed that at the club level he sometimes hesitates, particularly when out of form,” Brosque stated. “However, this time he was precise. He had a clear idea of his approach and executed it confidently.
“It’s easy to squander those kinds of opportunities if confidence is lacking, but I truly appreciated his overall performance. And you’re right, it’s gratifying when players, once doubted, respond with such a performance.
“It validates their selection and reassures the manager, showcasing his quality across both matches.”
Rugari added: “As for Teague potentially heading to Europe, I think Nishan Velupillay might also be eyeing something similar quite soon.”
“Popa encourages them to expand their horizons and experience higher-level football, not just for the skill improvement, but to toughen their physique for the demands of international competition.”
