Alexander Isak has etched his name into the rich tapestry of Newcastle United history by netting what proved to be the decisive goal in yesterday’s EFL Cup Final against Liverpool.
The Swedish forward executed a deft first-time finish after Jacob Murphy’s clever knockdown, putting the Magpies 2-0 up just eight minutes into the second half, ultimately sealing a 2-1 victory at Wembley.
This marks Newcastle’s first major trophy since they lifted the FA Cup in 1955, and the 25-year-old recognised the significance of this moment for the club.
“It’s unbelievable. The club has waited 70 years for this moment, and it feels surreal,” he expressed to Viaplay post-match.
“It means the world to me. I’ve spent a few years at this club, built strong relationships, and I truly believe these players deserve this. And the fans have been phenomenal.”
Isak had the opportunity to increase his tally moments prior when he seized on a rebound after Liverpool failed to clear a corner.
However, that effort was chalked off as Bruno Guimarães was deemed to be in an offside position and obscured Reds goalkeeper CaoimhÃn Kelleher’s view at the time of the initial shot.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Isak reflected on how he managed to move past the disappointment of the disallowed goal.
“Matches like this come down to key moments. It’s not solely about performing well as a striker; it’s about being prepared to take your chance when it arises and finishing it off,” he remarked.
Now that Newcastle has finally broken their trophy drought, the Solna-born player is optimistic about the future for the club and its supporters.
“After such a long time without a trophy, it can weigh on your mind, but now that we’ve clinched this victory, brighter days should be on the horizon for us.”
“I believe this is just the beginning. We’re going to see so much more from this club.”
