The Roosters’ captain, James Tedesco, has disclosed that Sam Walker is making good progress in his recovery from an ACL injury, which is set to aid the club’s push for a spot in the finals.
Walker sustained his injury during a match against the Raiders in round 26 of last year, sidelining him for the remaining matches of the season and at least the first half of this year.
In his absence, Chad Townsend has stepped in as halfback, with Sandon Smith joining him in the playmaking role. Smith delivered a standout performance in the Roosters’ surprising win over the Panthers, contributing with a try assist, two line break assists, and scoring a try himself.
According to Tedesco, Walker could be back in action by the time the State of Origin series kicks off.
However, the Roosters may be without Angus Crichton and Connor Watson during that time, as they are expected to represent the Blues.

“I reckon he’ll be back around the middle of the year, possibly round 12 or 13,” Tedesco stated during his appearance on Nine’s 100% Footy.
“He’s been training with us and taking part in most of the sessions, although he’s not fully engaging in contact just yet. He’s been out there making cut-out passes and causing a nuisance, so he looks good.”
Upon Walker’s return, he will have the talented Mark Nawaqanitawase to work with.

The rugby union recruit was the first to score for the Roosters against the Panthers, quickly making a name for himself in his brief league career.
Tedesco hailed him as “one of our best players”.

“He’s a powerful player—strong, quick, and with excellent footwork—but it’s his finesse that really surprised me when he arrived. His quick hands and decision-making on when to pass or run have been invaluable for us,” he explained.
“He’s still adapting to the NRL and learning the nuances of playing left centre, which isn’t an easy transition defensively. However, he asks plenty of questions, is a great teammate, and learns quickly. He’s doing remarkably well.”
