Essendon Bombers legend Matthew Lloyd has urged for patience regarding Eagles talent Harley Reid following a lacklustre display against the Suns.
West Coast suffered a heavy defeat at home, losing by 87 points, with Reid facing criticism for his behaviour, particularly after he went to ground easily following minimal contact from Charlie Ballard.
During the match, Reid also exchanged words with opposition players. AFL icon David King later noted that Reid appeared more interested in confrontation than in playing the game.

As the first overall pick from 2023, Reid has also found himself at the centre of considerable contract speculation, with suggestions he could soon become the AFL’s first $2 million player.
Lloyd stressed the importance of allowing the 19-year-old more time to develop.
“His performance was underwhelming, but I can see why,” he remarked on Nine’s Footy Classified.
“The expectations placed on Harley Reid are immense, and comparisons are often made to (Collingwood’s young star) Nick Daicos… every player drafted from one to ten faces challenges early on.”
“Most players are still finding their feet in their second year. While his attitude does need some work, there’s no denying the pressure he faces.”

Lloyd went on to stress that Reid requires backing from the experienced players in his team, commending Oscar Allen for stepping in during a heated moment at half-time when Reid was arguing with his opponents.
“I empathise with the situation, as someone like Dustin Martin in his second year was still trying to find his way, making mistakes too, which highlights the importance of senior leadership. I’m confident Reid will evolve into an exceptional player,” he added.
“If Jamarra Ugle-Hagan doesn’t reach his potential, the Bulldogs can argue they provided him with everything, including mentoring from Marcus Bontempelli. If he can’t capitalise on that, it indicates he might struggle elsewhere,” he stated regarding young talents.
“In Reid’s case, I have no doubt he’s being nurtured well, but sometimes it takes two or three years for a player to truly click, regardless of their talent.”
