Danish fashion and sports label Hummel is set to reintroduce a jersey that encapsulates some of Denmark’s most significant setbacks while heralding a new chapter for Danish football.
The Danish Football Federation (DBU) and Hummel are bringing back the iconic 1988 European Championship jersey, famously donned by Danish legends like Michael Laudrup, Morten Olsen, and Preben Elkjaer.
This shirt showcases a classic red base adorned with a subtle jacquard pattern, complemented by white detailing, which features hummel’s signature chevrons and bold stripes.
“In response to overwhelming enthusiasm from Danish fans, we are thrilled to reintroduce the unforgettable national team jersey from Euro ’88. While this jersey didn’t coincide with Denmark’s most celebrated football achievements, it stands as a testament to an era that helped elevate Danish football on the global stage. That’s why we believe fans should have the opportunity to revisit those memories and sport a piece of the national team’s rich legacy,” stated hummel’s Marketing Director, Morten Lund.
The kit was initially launched in anticipation of the 1988 European Championship held in Germany, where Sepp Piontek’s team exited the tournament with a disappointing goal difference of 2-7, having faced a challenging group alongside Spain, Italy, and the host nation, West Germany.
Later, the jersey made an appearance during the qualification for the 1990 World Cup, where Denmark achieved an impressive 7-1 victory against Greece on home soil, yet ultimately failed to qualify after suffering a 3-1 defeat against a formidable Romanian team led by the legendary Gheorghe Hagi in Bucharest.
