Cameron Murray has shared insights into the evolution of his relationship with Wayne Bennett, candidly admitting that he felt “scared” of the Rabbitohs coach during the early stages of his career.
At 27 years old and set to miss the entire season due to an Achilles injury, Murray has solidified his status as the heart and soul of the South Sydney club in recent seasons.
Regarded as one of the most esteemed players in the game, his performance at both the club and representative levels has propelled him into the spotlight of rugby league stardom.
Despite his undeniable skill from the very start, Murray wasn’t always viewed through the same lens by the sport’s most decorated head coach.

In an interview with Nine’s 100% Footy, Murray was asked about whether he felt intimidated by Bennett during the coach’s initial stint at Redfern, to which he replied without hesitation.
“Absolutely,” Murray stated.
“When he first arrived here, I was genuinely intimidated by him, just like every young player is. He carries that aura and reputation as one of the greatest coaches in the game.”
“During the first year or two, he was quite tough on me, treating me like a newcomer and keeping a bit of distance between us.”

When Bennett first joined the Rabbitohs, Murray was a mere 21 years old, yet he had already tasted success at the representative level, having played State of Origin and Test football.
Now, fast-forward to Bennett’s return in 2025, and Murray has ascended to the role of captain for the illustrious club.
“He has been fantastic for me,” Murray said.
“He genuinely cares, and he has a unique way of expressing it.”
“With his return, it’s as if we’ve become close friends. I recognise that the dynamic has shifted; I’m the captain now, and he needs to communicate and collaborate with me.”
“Honestly, I’m not accustomed to him engaging with me this much; he’s been exceptionally friendly.”

The effect of Murray’s absence is already being felt at Souths, despite the team securing two victories so far. He will also miss out on representing the NSW Blues in the upcoming year.
While coping with this setback has been challenging, Murray is focusing on the positive aspects.
“I’m managing alright – the first week or two was rough,” he shared.
“I’ve come to terms with it now; it’s just part and parcel of rugby league, unfortunately.”
