The pathway for the return of State of Origin in the AFL looks more promising, with plans underway to adjust the date of the grand final.
Eddie McGuire from Nine revealed these intentions during a segment on 9news Melbourne, amid ongoing speculation throughout the year regarding the revival of Origin.
This initiative is part of a significant overhaul of the AFL’s fixture, aimed at minimising clashes with other sports and major events.
McGuire indicated that the grand finals for 2026 and 2027 would be shifted to the second week of October, while Origin matches would kick off the season in March over two weekends.

According to McGuire, moving the grand final would help “avoid conflicts with the Grand Prix early in the season,” necessitating a delay in round one.
In 2026, the AFL also intends to schedule a bye weekend that coincides with the NFL games, along with celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Test match between Australia and England.
“Crucially, this alteration offers players and fans a better start to the season in optimal conditions,” McGuire explained.
“Furthermore, it ensures that the end of the season won’t suffer from clashes with rival codes for the three major games—two preliminary finals and the grand final—allowing the AFL to maximise television ratings and commercial success.”
“Additionally, there is the prospect of a daylight savings grand final in October 2026, potentially leading to a night match,” he added.
