Alex Carey demonstrated that his exceptional fielding abilities extend far beyond wicketkeeping by executing a catch that could very well be the highlight of the tournament in Australia’s first match of the Champions Trophy.
England’s opener, Phil Salt, started the game with a bang, hammering a four and a six in the opening over bowled by Spencer Johnson.
However, his explosive start was short-lived, thanks to a stunning display of skill from Carey.

With Josh Inglis donning the gloves, Carey took up a position at mid-on for the second over.
Ben Dwarshuis sent a delivery towards Salt, who attempted to play a flick shot through mid-on. Carey leapt to his right, making a stunning catch with his right hand.
“What a catch! That is an absolutely unbelievable catch,” commented England legend Michael Atherton during Amazon Prime’s broadcast.
“Alex Carey, typically seen behind the stumps with the gloves on, has thrown himself to his right and taken a truly phenomenal catch at mid-on.”

Mel Jones pointed out that Inglis was the first player to celebrate with his fellow wicketkeeper.
“He understands the challenges keepers face in the field, especially when transitioning between positions,” she remarked.
“That ball had pace on it, and Carey launched himself perfectly off his right foot — that’s how it’s done.”
Carey was back in action in the sixth over, as Jamie Smith sent another delivery from Dwarshuis towards him, which this time resulted in an easier catch.
Smith’s dismissal at 15 saw England at 2-43 after just 5.2 overs.
