Short-form sensation Glenn Maxwell has declared his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket as Australia gears up for the forthcoming T20 World Cup.
Maxwell is set to focus on the 2026 tournament in India and Sri Lanka, concluding his 50-over career with a total of 149 matches for Australia.
The 36-year-old follows in the footsteps of Steve Smith, who also exited the format earlier this year in March.
“I felt as though I was somewhat letting the team down due to how my body was responding to the conditions at the Champions Trophy. I had a candid discussion with (chairman of selectors) George Bailey, where I sought his insights on what the future holds,” he mentioned.
“We explored the possibilities for the 2027 World Cup, and I told him, ‘I don’t believe I’ll be part of that, so it’s time to start planning for others in my position to step up and claim it for themselves’. Hopefully, they will have sufficient time to establish themselves in that role.”
