England’s manager Sarina Wiegman is keeping a close watch on her team’s defence of the European Women’s Championship as they prepare to face Belgium in a double-header for the Nations League.
In their previous international fixtures back in February, the Lionesses played to a draw against Portugal but triumphed over Spain – the side that bested them in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final.
This Friday, England will host Belgium in Bristol, followed by an away match in Leuven on April 8th. Wiegman mentioned on Thursday that she is also starting to think ahead to Euro 2025, set to take place in Switzerland in July.
“It’s essential for us to have a clear understanding of our team,” Wiegman stated.
“While we are keen to win both matches against Belgium, it’s also about preparing the squad for the Euros, knowing who is available and who is performing well.”
England striker Alessia Russo played a pivotal role in Arsenal’s advancement to the Champions League semi-finals, scoring twice against Real Madrid to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit.
Leah Williamson, captain of England and part of that Arsenal victory, praised her teammate.
“People often mention how lovely Alessia is, and everyone wants her to succeed for that reason,” Williamson remarked.
“To be a number nine in any team, you need that confidence, and we all want to see her playing at her best because she truly deserves it; she works hard for it.
“We recognise her talent, and seeing her score goals is fantastic for her.”
Earlier on Thursday, it was almost confirmed that the UK will host the 2035 Women’s World Cup, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino calling it the “only valid bid.”
“This is excellent news. Hosting the tournament here would be fantastic,” Wiegman said, who led England to victory at Euro 2022 on home soil.
“We’ve experienced how significant the Euros were here and the momentum it brings to the sport in this country.
“Another tournament on an even larger scale would be tremendous and provide an additional boost to the game.”
