Connor Watson has come out in support of Chad Townsend, even though the seasoned halfback for the Sydney Roosters appears to be facing the axe this week.
The 34-year-old was initially brought in as a backup to Sam Walker this season, but has found himself in a starting role due to Walker’s long-term knee injury.
Both Townsend and his halves partner Sandon Smith have faced challenges in the first five rounds, managing only one win against the Panthers.
Things deteriorated further on Friday night against arch-rivals South Sydney, with the Roosters squandering a significant lead in the second half.
Townsend had a particularly tough night, twice kicking the ball out on the full and failing to execute a dropout at a pivotal moment in the match. His defensive efforts have also come under scrutiny.

As he faces a challenging match against the Broncos, Townsend’s future looks uncertain, yet Watson didn’t hold back in his defence of the experienced player.
“I think it’s a bit unjust,” he remarked to the press on Monday.
“There are 13 players out there … a half can only do so much on their own.”

“In terms of his role as a mentor and the influence he’s had at the club, he has been fantastic for everyone. I’m really enjoying having him around; he’s a genuinely great person and brings a wealth of experience.
“Having that mind in the locker room is something we all appreciate.”
Local junior Hugo Savala is anticipated to step into the No.7 jersey this Friday.
Additionally, reports suggest that coach Trent Robinson is considering sidelining star winger Dom Young after a lacklustre performance against the Rabbitohs, which included several poor defensive decisions.
Mark Nawaqanitawase is expected to return from a calf injury and is likely to be named on the wing on Tuesday afternoon.
