WA Premier Roger Cook has directed his frustrations at the NRL’s leadership, urging them to “take the Perth Bears expansion bid seriously.”
In recent months, the dialogue surrounding the establishment of a potential 19th team has been filled with uncertainty, with weekend reports indicating that the proposal may have been shelved.
Though the creation of a new franchise in Perth isn’t completely dismissed, Cook has appealed to figures such as Peter V’landys and Andrew Abdo to demonstrate ‘respect’ for the state.

“We haven’t received any official word,” he remarked to 9News.
“Instead, we hear news through the eastern states media, which has been a disappointing aspect of our communications with them.
“Western Australia is the only location that can truly represent the ‘N’ in NRL.

“The NRL cannot claim to be a national competition without a team on the west coast.
“The league needs to take this seriously and treat us with the respect we deserve, rather than viewing us merely as a financial opportunity.”
Cook’s pointed remarks arise as the league prepares for a double-header at Optus Stadium this weekend, featuring matches between the Sea Eagles and Cronulla, as well as South Sydney and the Cowboys.
Rabbitohs back-rower Keaon Koloamatangi believes that securing a Perth team is essential for expanding the sport.
“We’re known as the National Rugby League for a reason,” he stated.
“If we aim to grow the game, establishing a team in Perth would be a significant advantage for us.”
