The Sheffield Shield’s bonus points system is under fire following Queensland’s clinching of a place in the final, despite having fewer wins compared to Victoria.
Queensland is set to face South Australia next Wednesday in Adelaide, having drawn with South Australia in the final round, alongside favourable results on a thrilling last day of the regular season.
An extraordinary outfield catch by Victoria’s Campbell Kellaway (watch the video above) electrified the decisive final day.

With Tuesday approaching, South Australia had already secured a place in a home final, though at Karen Rolton Oval instead of Adelaide Oval due to a contentious AFL decision. Queensland, NSW, and Western Australia were all still in the running for a final berth.
The dramatic outcomes saw Queensland and South Australia finish in a draw, Tasmania achieving a staggering 326-run victory over NSW, and Victoria triumphing by 34 runs against WA.
Ultimately, Queensland ended up second on the ladder, finishing with 0.27 more points than Victoria in third place, despite the Bushrangers recording four victories compared to Queensland’s three. The Bulls benefited not only from bonus points but also from four draws, whereas the Bushrangers managed only one.

Victoria’s captain, Will Sutherland, raised concerns regarding the bonus points system after the Bushrangers secured a victory over WA, spearheaded by the relentless Peter Siddle in his last first-class match.
“It’s a bit frustrating. We probably have to take responsibility; losing three or four matches in a row and letting two games slip that we should have won is tough,” Sutherland remarked.
“… However, we did win four matches, and Queensland has made the final with just three wins, which feels a bit odd and confusing within the context of the bonus system.
“That being said, there are definitely two games we know we could have (and should have) won.”
Before the final day, Queensland’s wicketkeeper-batter, Jimmy Peirson, acknowledged the bizarre nature of a team qualifying for the final with only three victories.
“I’ve never experienced a season where three wins could see you in a Shield final. It’s such a strange situation,” commented Peirson, who scored 128 in Queensland’s innings.

Kellaway delivered a spectacular performance, capped off by an incredible catch behind square on the leg side during Victoria’s successful chase against WA.
With WA at 7-308 and chasing 382 for victory, Cameron Gannon attempted a hook shot off a delivery from Sutherland. The possibility of Kellaway completing the catch seemed unlikely, but the 22-year-old opener sprinted in and leapt like Superman towards the boundary, snagging the ball one-handed with an outstretched right arm.
Kellaway’s amazing catch followed an unbeaten 165 runs in Victoria’s second innings.
Sutherland was asked if he had witnessed many catches that could rival Kellaway’s.
“Honestly, I don’t think I have,” the captain replied.
“The footage did a great job capturing it, though it’s not quite Big Bash-level quality.
“For him to take that catch into the sun, too, under those conditions makes it an extraordinary effort.
“It was almost as impressive as his 150 or 160 runs.
“He had a remarkable game overall.”
In other matches, NSW’s teenage sensation Sam Konstas and his opening partner Blake Nikitaras scored 68 and 51 respectively after their side was set an imposing target of 529 runs to chase down.
However, the dismissal of the two-Test rookie spurred a collapse that dashed the Blues’ hopes of a miraculous comeback in their quest for a finals berth.
Test spinner Matt Kuhnemann took 5-49, leading Tasmania to bowl out NSW for just 202 and achieve a resounding victory.
Additionally, Siddle has been widely lauded as a cricketing giant, having led Victoria to victory with 4-68 in his farewell match at the age of 40.
The wicket that sealed the win also marked the former Test quick’s 792nd first-class wicket.
