Australian Test captain Pat Cummins remains optimistic that the talented young batsman Sam Konstas will reclaim his place in the top order before too long.
As the World Test Championship final approaches in June, Cummins is confident that Konstas, despite facing challenges in recent Sheffield Shield matches following a promising debut Test on Boxing Day, will be prepared for another opportunity.
The Australian team understands that he is determined to absorb as much experience as possible at any level in the meantime.
“What an incredible start for him – just 19 years old and he was like a kid in a candy store all summer, absolutely relishing the experience,” Cummins shared on Nine’s Today program on Friday morning.
“He’ll keep on learning, just as we all do.”

“At such a young age, you quickly realise that there’s a lot to adapt to,” Cummins added.
Though Konstas missed the two-Test series against Sri Lanka abroad, he travelled with the team to familiarise himself with the varying pitches and batting scenarios.
“It was his first experience in Sri Lanka, the first time he’d even faced subcontinental conditions,” Cummins noted.
“I’m confident he’ll pick things up quickly, and there are still several Sheffield Shield games left for NSW.”
“By the time we reach the World Test Championship final, I have no doubt his name will be in the mix for selection.”
The focus then shifted to Saturday night’s Champions Trophy fixture against England, while Cummins remains at home, taking care of his newborn daughter, Edith.
However, he was reserved about naming potential batting stars for the match.
“We have a strong pool of players to choose from. Since I’m not there, I can’t say who will take the field,” he remarked.

“Travis Head was crucial in leading us to victory in the World Cup a couple of years back, so I’m anticipating great things from him,” Cummins continued.
“Steve Smith is in superb form during Test matches, and I’m sure that will translate well into ODIs, along with some young talents getting a shot — which is always exciting.”
As for his own return to the playing field, the fast bowler is on track to make an earlier-than-expected comeback.
“I’m progressing well; I reckon I’ll be back in a few weeks,” he mentioned.

Cummins ensured he would do everything possible to be in peak physical condition for the World Test Championship final in a few months.
“We’ve got some T20s ahead, but the main focus is on the World Test Championship final in June, and I will ensure I’m fit and ready for that,” he affirmed.
The Australian team is set to face England at 8pm (AEDT) on Saturday in their opening group stage match for the Champions Trophy.
