Collingwood triumphed in a thrilling King’s Birthday showdown against Melbourne, managing to hold on in the final moments to cement their reputation as the top team in the league.
The match was a nail-biter, with the Magpies clinching victory over the Demons by a narrow margin of 11.6 (72) to 10.11 (71) on Monday afternoon.
Throughout the contest, Nick Daicos and Kysaiah Pickett emerged as the standout players, both making their mark in significant ways, including a pivotal incident during the fourth quarter.
Daicos executed a strong tackle on Pickett, earning a holding the ball decision in the centre of the ground. However, rather than returning the footy to Daicos, the star Demon left it on the ground, resulting in a clear 50-metre penalty.

In such a tightly contested fixture, this decision awarded Collingwood a crucial goal.
Fox Footy commentator Dwayne Russell was astonished by the incident.
“Oh dear – no, no, no,” he expressed.
“He did the same thing last week without learning from it. And of all people, letting back into the game is Nick Daicos.”
Former Hawthorn star Jason Dunstall concurred.
“You just can’t afford to make that mistake,” he stated.
“They had fought so hard to get within a point, only to give it away in that manner.”
Daicos seized the moment, having been closely marked by Melbourne’s Ed Langdon for a large part of the contest.
The Brownlow Medal contender had just seven touches in the first half but rallied to finish strongly, amassing 19 disposals overall.

Richmond legend Matthew Richardson praised the tagging strategy, suggesting that the Pies may not have predicted it.
“Daicos simply won’t outpace Langdon, so it’s an astute match-up by Simon Goodwin. It’s something that likely took everyone by surprise,” Richardson remarked on 3AW.
On the other hand, Pickett redeemed himself for his earlier blunder by executing a stunning snap on the run late in the match, contributing to his tally of three goals for the encounter.
This wasn’t Melbourne’s only key error; young midfielder Xavier Lindsay also conceded a 50m penalty that resulted in a goal earlier in the match.
Steven May, visibly frustrated, confronted Lindsay after the free kick.
May also had strong words for Max Gawn after the ruckman’s botched kick in the final minute deep in defence, which hit a Collingwood player and sealed the outcome.
“It’s hard not to interpret that,” said Russell.
“They seemed out of sync. Perhaps there’s some underlying tension there. Max is the captain; his leadership is paramount.”
Dunstall shared similar concerns regarding the situation.
“We just saw Gawn leave the field, and he looked furious,” Dunstall noted.
“Max clearly didn’t appreciate that. He walked straight into the rooms, away from everyone.”
In recognition of his performance, Pies defender Josh Daicos was awarded the Neale Daniher Trophy for best on ground after achieving 34 disposals.
