Manchester United made a spirited comeback from two goals down in the second half to secure a 2-2 draw against Everton at Goodison Park. This result keeps the Toffees unbeaten in their last six Premier League outings under David Moyes.
With Everton on a strong run of form heading into the match, their aggressive start was anticipated.
They quickly turned up the heat on United’s defence, with Beto having the first opportunity to score, but his header was comfortably saved by Andre Onana.
Although United managed to create a couple of threatening crosses, Everton’s high-energy pressing proved to be overwhelming.
After a failed clearance from a corner, Abdoulaye Doucoure directed a header through the crowd to Beto, who volleyed the ball into the roof of the net, leaving Onana with no chance.
This marked Beto’s fifth goal in just four Premier League matches, which only amplified his team’s momentum, leading to a swift doubling of their advantage shortly after the half-hour mark.
A well-placed cross from Beto found Jack Harrison, whose shot forced an impressive save from Onana, only for Doucoure to capitalise on the rebound, heading it into the net.
In the first half, United struggled to make an impact, relieved that Beto didn’t find the net again when Noussair Mazraoui intervened to clear Doucoure’s cross.
Despite a slight improvement, United continued to have little effect going forward as the second half commenced. Onana was called upon once again to deny Doucoure’s powerful volley.
However, with 20 minutes left on the clock, Alejandro Garnacho won a free-kick just outside the area, allowing Bruno Fernandes to deceive Jordan Pickford and score into the far corner.
This changed the atmosphere in Merseyside dramatically, prompting United to search for an equaliser within the next ten minutes. Another failure to clear from a set-piece allowed Manuel Ugarte to volley in from the edge of the box.
The equaliser led to a frenetic finish, and Pickford had to be at his best to tip over a strike from Fernandes, denying United a complete comeback. In a dramatic turn of events deep into stoppage time, the Toffees were thwarted by VAR after Ashley Young appeared to be brought down by Matthijs de Ligt, leaving Everton visibly frustrated at the final whistle.
Despite the draw, Everton continues to rise under Moyes’ management. Meanwhile, United’s recent display, particularly in the final 20 minutes, may offer encouragement to Ruben Amorim after a challenging start to the season.
