Atalanta’s head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has announced that he does not plan to extend his contract with the Serie A club. On Saturday, he mentioned that while he would consider the possibility of prolonging his current agreement until 2026, he is not inclined to pursue it.
Since his appointment in 2016, Gasperini has significantly altered the club’s trajectory, leading them from a mid-table position to becoming consistent contenders in the Champions League over his nine-year tenure.
In the previous season, under the direction of the 67-year-old, Atalanta clinched the Europa League title with a convincing 3-0 victory against Bayer Leverkusen in the final.
Gasperini’s current contract runs until June 2025, with an option for an additional year.
When questioned about Atalanta’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League this season, as they currently sit third in Serie A with 51 points from 25 matches, Gasperini remarked to the media: “I have limited time to achieve this, it might be my last opportunity.”
“Indeed, as has been said, everything has a beginning and an end. We will evaluate at the end of the season whether to see out my contract or to part ways. It’s clear that there will be no continuity or renewal beyond this point.”
Gasperini commenced his coaching career with the youth team at Juventus and took the helm at Atalanta following a second spell at Genoa.
During his tenure at Genoa, he successfully guided the team back to Serie A in 2007 after a 12-year hiatus from the top tier. His coaching experience also includes stints with Inter Milan and Palermo.
