Billy Slater has expressed his backing for Broncos’ talented fullback Reece Walsh, amidst increasing scrutiny regarding his number of mistakes on the field.
In Brisbane’s recent clash against the Cowboys during round three, Walsh showcased some spectacular plays, but he also recorded five errors while handling the ball.
Just a week prior, he faced a challenging match in an unexpected defeat to the Raiders.
Although his coach, Michael Maguire, publicly supported Walsh, concerns have been raised about whether his high-energy playing style is becoming a liability for the Broncos.
Nonetheless, according to Slater—who has coached Walsh at the State of Origin level—the positives are still outweighing the negatives as the young talent hones his skills.

“It’s a bit of everything—naturally he will continue to grow, develop, and become a more reliable player,” Slater remarked.
“That’s the natural progression one goes through during different phases of their career.
“Personally, I believe he’s performing quite well. He’s making significant contributions defensively and is fully committed to his defensive duties.

“He had some standout moments with the ball, and while there are certainly a few errors in his performance… I know how hard he works and how he reflects on his own game, so he’ll be addressing it.
“When you generate numerous scoring opportunities, there’s a tendency to feel like it has to consistently happen, and that can impact your mindset.
“He will mature and will find greater consistency over time.”
Brad Fittler highlighted the importance of Walsh’s teammates in his development.
“It’s also about the team supporting him,” he noted.
“Often, it’s when another player enters his space. With his rapid pace, he’s consistently on the move every time he gets the ball.”
At just 22 years of age, Walsh has risen to prominence in rugby league following his thrilling breakout season with the Broncos two years ago.
Having represented the Maroons, he will now face increasing pressure to keep his spot in the No.1 jersey with Kalyn Ponga available for the upcoming series.
Next up for Brisbane is a showdown with the Dolphins in round four.
