Luciano Spalletti has announced he is stepping down as the head coach of the Italian national team following a disappointing 3-0 loss to Norway.
This marks the end of Spalletti’s tenure in charge of Italy’s football team. With a crucial World Cup qualifier against Moldova just around the corner, speculation surrounding his resignation had been growing.
The defeat to Norway has significantly complicated the Azzurri’s qualification chances for the next World Cup, igniting a firestorm of discussion regarding Spalletti’s position. At a recent press conference before the match against Moldova, he addressed the uncertainty surrounding his future.
“Last night, I had a conversation with FIGC President Gabriele Gravina, who informed me that I would be dismissed as national coach,” Spalletti shared. “It saddens me; considering our relationship, I never planned to resign. I would have preferred to continue working, especially when results haven’t gone my way. Nonetheless, it’s become a matter of resignation, and I must acknowledge that.”
“My role has always been about serving the country, and I want to contribute to the national team’s future. I believe it’s important to seek the best options, so I’m terminating my contract. I’ll be with the team tomorrow night against Moldova. I’ve always believed in the quality of my players. The results during my time reflect this, and I take full responsibility,” he added.

“I have a deep affection for this jersey, my role, and the players I’ve had the privilege to coach. Tomorrow night, I’ll be urging them to demonstrate the determination I asked for, even though I couldn’t deliver my best,” Spalletti continued.
“What pains me most? It’s not being able to implement the quality of play I envisioned. I’m disappointed in myself. I knew this position would have its challenges, but I didn’t manage to succeed. I’ve sensed sympathy in your comments; frankly, my results could have warranted harsher criticism. I’ve posed challenges for the movement with my outcomes,” said the coach.
