Harry Maguire, the centre-back for Manchester United, should be reinstated into the England squad, as his leadership skills could significantly benefit the national team, according to Ruben Amorim, the head coach of the Premier League club.
The 31-year-old defender, who has earned 64 caps for his country, was among the notable omissions from the squad for the 2024 European Championship in Germany, where England ended up as runners-up after falling to Spain 2-1 in the final last July.
Maguire, who lost his role as club captain under former manager Erik ten Hag in 2023, has shown marked improvement in his performances for United this season. He has notably scored decisive goals against Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round and Ipswich Town in the Premier League last month.
Thomas Tuchel, the former manager of Chelsea and Bayern Munich, took over from Gareth Southgate in October after Southgate stepped down following England’s defeat in the Euro final. Tuchel is expected to announce his first squad this month for the upcoming World Cup European qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.
“Whether that’s enough is up to the national coach. I would be absolutely delighted for him, as I believe he deserves it,” Amorim stated to reporters when asked if Maguire’s recent form merits consideration from England.
“He’s a fantastic person, though there’s always room for improvement. As a player, the capacity to grow is limitless,” Amorim continued, discussing ahead of their FA Cup fifth round match against Fulham this Sunday at Old Trafford.
“However, his current performances are quite impressive, and he exudes a greater sense of leadership now, which could be invaluable for the national team. I truly hope he is included in the squad for the upcoming matches.”
