Coach Luciano Spalletti has acknowledged that Italy is currently navigating a challenging phase following their heavy defeat against Norway, stating that he will be in discussions with the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) regarding the ongoing situation.
Italy hasn’t qualified for a World Cup since 2014, marking a stark contrast for a nation that once basked in the glory of four world titles.
After a disastrous beginning to the qualifying campaign, highlighted by a 3-0 drubbing in Oslo at the hands of Norway, Spalletti finds himself facing mounting pressure.
Italy struggled throughout the match against a Norwegian side that excelled on counterattacks, appearing decidedly second-best on a damp evening at Ullevaal Stadium.
“We need a touch more enthusiasm from each individual. We must inject something extra into our game; otherwise, change is necessary,” Spalletti expressed to the press.
“This doesn’t reflect who we are supposed to be; individually, we have more to give, but it’s evident that we’re in a challenging period. Several factors have influenced our performance, yet this is the squad I’ve selected and will persist with,” he added.
When questioned about his status as the head coach of the national team, Spalletti conceded that tough conversations with the FIGC are imminent.
“I need to discuss with President (Gabriele) Gravina regarding their expectations and perspectives about the choices I make,” said Spalletti.
“I picked this group because I believed in their quality, but if we are so vulnerable that we can’t maintain an offside trap or track opponents effectively, then it indicates a lack of confidence.
“Quality alone isn’t sufficient without that.”
Spalletti was also questioned about his concerns that World Cup qualification might already be slipping away following the loss to Norway.
“There are always concerns, particularly after a performance like that; it’s essential to reflect and recognise the issues at hand, but we must confront them, as there are no other options,” he indicated.
