Luciano Spalletti has announced his departure as head coach of the Italian national team following a disappointing 3-0 loss to Norway.
The tenure of Luciano Spalletti as the Azzurri’s coach is officially over. With a crucial World Cup qualifier against Moldova fast approaching, speculation about his resignation had been mounting.
The heavy defeat against Norway has severely hindered Italy’s chances of qualifying for the upcoming World Cup, leading to intense discussions within the squad and raising concerns about Spalletti’s future. At the press conference prior to the match against Moldova, the coach addressed the swirling doubts regarding his position.
“We had a conversation last night and he (FIGC President Gabriele Gravina) informed me that my time as national team coach is coming to an end,” Spalletti stated. “I was disappointed; given our relationship, I had no plans to resign. Particularly in tough times like these, I would have preferred to continue my work. However, since it has come to this, I must formally acknowledge it.”
“I have always viewed this role as a service to my country, and I want to facilitate a positive future for the national team. I believe it’s important to seek the best for Italy, hence I will be terminating my contract. I will be on the touchline tomorrow night against Moldova. I’ve always maintained that my players are capable. The outcomes during my time in charge reflect that, and I must take responsibility,” he added.

“I have a deep affection for this shirt, my role, and the players I have guided. Tomorrow night, I will urge them to demonstrate what I expect of them, even if I wasn’t able to provide my best,” Spalletti continued.
“What hurt me the most? Not being able to achieve the level of performance I desired. I feel regretful. When I accepted this position, I understood the challenges ahead. Unfortunately, I was not successful. I’ve noticed that you have shown kindness in your assessments; you may have deserved a better outcome. My results have created challenges for the team.” the coach reflected.
