Adam Gabriel, the Czech international right-back playing for Danish champions FC Midtjylland, has found an unusual way to spend his spare time – running alongside busy roads in Silkeborg to protect migrating frogs.
This unique pastime has arisen as frogs make their seasonal journey, resulting in numerous amphibians at risk of being crushed by vehicles.
“I’m just trying to do as much as I can, and I hope to make a difference. Saving hundreds of frogs each day really matters,” Gabriel told TV Midtvest.
He claims to have rescued over 250 frogs so far, releasing them into a nearby small lake.
The 23-year-old Czech has voiced his concerns about Silkeborg Municipality’s efforts to protect these creatures. He suggested the installation of barriers leading to a collection bucket, a solution commonly utilised in his home country.
“It’s not costly, and I believe it’s a straightforward solution. If there are lots of frogs, then it’s definitely worth considering,” Adam Gabriel commented.
Mathias Henneberg, head of water and nature at Silkeborg Municipality, commended Gabriel’s initiative but acknowledged the challenges the municipality faces in safeguarding all the frogs.
“This is a challenge that various species encounter. It’s in animals’ nature to migrate, and they often cross roads,” he explained.
The football star has taken to Instagram, sharing videos to raise awareness and encourage further frog rescues.
For the Silkeborg municipality, it’s particularly significant to have a well-known football figure shining a light on this issue.
“It’s fantastic. It’s always encouraging to see someone who serves as a role model for youngsters taking the initiative,” said Henneberg.
Adam Gabriel has also committed to spending his Friday and Saturday evenings dedicated to rescuing more frogs.
“This is my passion and my responsibility. I hope others will join me, and together we can find a lasting solution,” Gabriel added.
