If his batting doesn’t secure a Test recall, Glenn Maxwell is optimistic that another vibrant aspect of his game might one day elevate him back into contention.
And that special quality is his fielding.
After being awarded the joint winner of the BBL Player of the Tournament alongside rising Perth Scorchers talent Cooper Connolly, the veteran of the Melbourne Stars shared insights about his impressive season.
Most notably, he recalled that remarkable catch at the Gabba on the boundary against the Brisbane Heat, highlighting what his fielding signifies for his overall career.
“I’ve never hidden the fact that (fielding) is my third weapon in the arsenal,” Maxwell stated while receiving his accolade.

“If there’s an opportunity for an all-rounder spot in the Test side, I’m counting on my fielding to give me the edge.
“It’s an area I’ve dedicated a considerable amount of time to. As I mentioned in commentary, I would have been quite disappointed in myself if I’d let that slip.”
The Stars legend acknowledged that he continues to evolve and teach younger players about the skills and significance of fielding.
“I focus heavily on it. It’s one of my main priorities when coaching others,” he remarked.
“If you excel in fielding, mastering the challenging aspects of the game makes the easier tasks feel straightforward.
“That’s a lesson I learnt in junior cricket and one I’ve carried throughout my career.”
Missing out on a Test selection again has taken a toll on the mental wellbeing of the 36-year-old.
He expressed heartfelt appreciation to his Stars teammates, who stood by him through the highs and lows of the season, especially in light of not being picked for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka.

“To my teammates who have been incredible in navigating the season’s highs and lows,” Maxwell began.
“They’ve truly been wonderful individuals to lean on. I’ve been open about my struggles with mental health over the years, and having their unwavering support throughout this journey – treating me like family – has been extraordinarily meaningful.”
The Stars managed to reach the BBL finals despite a shaky start, having lost their first five matches.
