Brisbane Broncos’ head coach Michael Maguire has acknowledged that Selwyn Cobbo’s omission from the squad is linked to performance standards, following his replacement by Josiah Karapani.
Initially listed to play on the wing, Cobbo will not feature against the Titans, with news of his dropped status emerging on the occasion of his 23rd birthday.
In a media briefing on Friday, Maguire elaborated on his choice, indicating that there are specific areas in Cobbo’s play that require enhancement.
“As a unit, including the leadership team and myself, we are pushing our standards and expectations in the way we approach our game,” he stated.
“Karapani has earned his chance, and Selly (Cobbo) needs to reflect on a few aspects of his game, and we’ll move forward from there.”

Maguire also noted that there is “definitely” a pathway for Cobbo to return to the team.
“I have regular conversations with Selly. Every player faces challenges, and this situation is no exception,” he remarked.
“Selly is working hard behind the scenes to ensure he gets back on track.”
His exclusion coincides with Cobbo being off-contract at the conclusion of the year.

The talented outside back appears to be far from signing with any other club, and this decision may adversely affect his market value.

Maguire, however, is unfazed by the possibility that his decision could lead to Cobbo departing from the club.
“I don’t view it that way,” he remarked.
“My focus is on coaching this team. We’re setting standards, and from the moment I arrived, the players have continued to strive towards those standards, which is exhilarating for me as a coach.
“As both a player and staff member, we must continue to meet those standards, as the more we achieve, the more opportunities we create.”
