“The A-League is fantastic; it’s a well-structured league and a competitive environment that’s continually evolving,” Leon stated.
“When the chance to play in New Zealand arose, we decided to remain in the league.”
“Although my primary role is as a defender, I consider myself to be proactive in attacking play. I always aim to do things that excite the fans,” added the former player for Tottenham, Watford, and Real Betis.
“I’ve enjoyed playing as a wing-back, where I had the licence to push forward and take risks. As a creative player, I strive to read the game effectively, applying strategy and technique.”
“It is a privilege to represent the Dominican Republic. I aim to bring that pride into my club and hope to share a bit about my heritage with everyone.”
“I’m eager to bring that cultural aspect to the team and am looking forward to connecting with everyone, including the fans.”
Interim head coach for the Phoenix, Amy Shepherd, commented: “Lucia is a proven asset in the A-League Women, bringing with her a wealth of international experience from Spain’s Liga F, the Women’s Super League in England, and her recent time here in Australia.
“With impressive stats in her position, Lucia’s ability to take on opponents in one-on-one scenarios and her contributions to scoring, either by finding the net or assisting, make her an invaluable asset to us.”
“As the captain of her national team, Lucia’s leadership goes beyond the pitch. We’re overjoyed to have her join the Phoenix whanau.”
Leon becomes the tenth player signed for the Wellington Phoenix women’s squad for the 2025-26 Ninja A-League season, with talks ongoing with other players whose contracts are expiring.
