The British and Irish Lions remain undefeated in Australia, clinching a 21-10 victory over the NSW Waratahs in Sydney on Saturday evening.
However, this match at Allianz Stadium proved to be their most challenging encounter on the tour thus far, especially after they comfortably dispatched both the Western Force and Queensland Reds with 50-point margins.
Sean Maloney, a commentator for Stan Sport, characterised it as a “remarkable turnaround” for the Waratahs, who finished in the bottom half of the Super Rugby Pacific standings.
NSW captain Hugh Sinclair expressed a sense of triumph after his final professional match.
“I’m incredibly proud. The Aussie media had us written off, predicting we’d lose by 90, 50, or 60 points, and we showed them otherwise,” Sinclair told Matt Burke from Stan Sport.
“It would be nice to see a bit of positivity from the media for the next couple of weeks. We turned up, and the team really stepped up.”
Scotland’s Huw Jones crossed the try line twice for the Lions, while England’s Alex Mitchell secured the third try to seal the win.
The Waratahs scored through winger Darby Lancaster and hooker Ethan Dobbins.
“The Waratahs might not have won, but they’ll celebrate as if they have,” Maloney remarked.
“They’ve won back a significant number of fans in Sydney.”
The Lions’ next match is against the Brumbies in Canberra on Wednesday, while the Wallabies are set to face Fiji in Newcastle tomorrow.
Lions 21 (Huw Jones 2, Alex Mitchell tries; Fin Smith 3 conversions) Waratahs 10 (Darby Lancaster, Ethan Dobbins tries). HT: 14-5
