The Football Associations of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales have announced their intention to submit an Expression of Interest to FIFA for the United Kingdom to host the 2035 Women’s World Cup, as stated on Wednesday.
This would mark the first occurrence of the tournament being held in Britain, adding to the country’s previous experience of hosting two Women’s European Championships in England, in 2005 and 2022.
FIFA’s Council has recently suggested Europe or Africa as potential hosts for the 2035 competition.
“Hosting the women’s World Cup on home soil would be another landmark moment in our sporting history, promoting growth and creating a lasting legacy. The government’s full backing is behind the FAs’ bid,” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer remarked in his statement.
FIFA has revealed that bids for both the 2031 and 2035 Women’s World Cups will be collected by late 2025, with the winner expected to be announced around mid-2026.
“We firmly believe we can deliver an outstanding tournament, building on the success of the UEFA Women’s EURO in 2022 and the remarkable growth of women’s football in England since,” said Mark Bullingham, CEO of the English Football Association.
The 2027 Women’s World Cup is set to take place in Brazil, marking the first time the tournament has been hosted in South America. The host nation for the 2031 tournament is yet to be determined.
