In a notable remark, an AFL icon has taken a gentle jab at the NRL as scrutiny intensifies over the rugby league’s choice to shift Friday’s opening round fixture.
The NRL made the decision to relocate the Dolphins’ match against South Sydney, scheduled for Friday night, as Tropical Cyclone Alfred approaches southern Queensland.
The clash was originally set to take place at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, but severe weather is anticipated to impact the region within the next 48 hours.
While the AFL postponed two of its opening round matches in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast due to the cyclone, the NRL opted to move its Friday night contest to Sydney.
At least three players from the Dolphins have had to pull out of the match to remain in Queensland and assist their families and friends in preparing for the cyclone.

The Dolphins have extended an offer to house families in a Brisbane hotel during the emergency if they choose to do so.
Essendon great Matthew Lloyd commended the AFL for their decision to halt events, saying, “We recognise that there are more important matters at hand, and football becomes a secondary concern this morning,” Lloyd remarked on Nine’s Today.

When asked whether the postponement might provide one team an edge when the matches are eventually played, Lloyd stated, “All teams are in the same situation, so I don’t believe it will significantly affect the sides.”
Dolphins player Kodi Nikorima has chosen to remain in Queensland following his wife’s criticism of the NRL on Instagram regarding the decision to relocate instead of postponing the game.
“There is a sense of apprehension among everyone,” Dolphins CEO Terry Reader commented on Wednesday.
“Partners of players and staff are our priority, and we’re doing everything possible to ensure everyone feels more comfortable and at ease.”
Broncos legend Sam Thaiday expressed understanding for players opting to stay home and assist their families, saying, “It’s a brief moment of calm before the storm at the moment,” Thaiday noted on Today.
“The uncertainty surrounding the cyclone has led some Dolphins players to rethink their plans and remain with their loved ones.”
Currently, the Dolphins are set to face the Rabbitohs in a Sydney match on Friday night, albeit with a weakened squad.
