Trent Robinson has brushed aside the “negative chatter” surrounding the Sydney Roosters, who are eager to rebound from two disappointing trials as they approach round one.
After suffering defeats against the Dragons and Knights in the pre-season, the Tricolours are set to host the formidable Brisbane Broncos in a significant season opener this Thursday.
The team has experienced a mass exodus of seasoned players in the off-season, and star talents Sam Walker and Brandon Smith are both ruled out until mid-2025.
Despite widespread belief that this could be the most challenging season of Robinson’s tenure—especially given recent trial performances—the three-time premiership coach has a different perspective.

“Not at all—it’s simply an exciting season ahead. I’m really looking forward to it,” Robinson commented.
“We certainly wanted to see better performances in the trials. While they’re important, they aren’t the sole indicator of our potential.
“There’s a fine line to strike; we garnered some valuable lessons from those matches. We can’t dismiss them entirely, but we have identified aspects we need to improve upon… that’s part of our review process, and we have certainly taken our lessons on board.
“There’s been a lot of focus on what we lack, but the players stepping up into those roles have been with us for some time… facing challenges can be a positive thing.”

In the opening two weeks of the season, Robinson’s men will take on heavyweights the Broncos and the Panthers—a daunting task, now made even more challenging due to the absence of Spencer Leniu.

Nonetheless, the seasoned coach has downplayed any talk of a sluggish start for his side in Bondi.
“I see that kind of talk as negative,” Robinson asserted.
“We have faith in our squad and what we can achieve—it’s up to us to demonstrate our potential right from the get-go.”
Naufahu Whyte will commence the match alongside Lindsay Collins in the front row, while a fresh halves combination of Sandon Smith and Chad Townsend will guide the Roosters throughout the game.
Salesi Foketi is set to make his NRL debut off the bench.
