Steve Smith has confirmed his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket following Australia’s departure from the Champions Trophy.
Just a day after their semi-final defeat against India, Smith shared his decision with teammates immediately post-match in Dubai.
The 35-year-old will, however, remain available for selection in Test and T20 formats moving forward.
In a statement issued on Wednesday evening, Smith expressed his gratitude to his Australian teammates and reflected on a stellar ODI career that has spanned over 15 years.

“It has been an incredible journey, and I’ve cherished every moment,” Smith remarked.
“I’ve had numerous extraordinary experiences and unforgettable memories.
“Securing two World Cup titles stands out as a major highlight, alongside the fantastic teammates I’ve had throughout this journey.
“This is an ideal time for others to gear up for the 2027 World Cup, so it seems right to step aside now.
“Test cricket is still my primary focus, and I’m eagerly anticipating the World Test Championship Final, our series against the West Indies this winter, and then facing England at home.
“I truly believe I have plenty more to offer at that level.”
Smith debuted in ODIs in 2010 and has since played 167 matches in the format, amassing a notable total of 5800 runs at an average of 43.
The right-handed batsman was part of both the 2015 and 2023 World Cup-winning squads for Australia.

“We completely understand and respect Steve’s choice to retire from one-day internationals,” said Australian chief selector George Bailey.
“Steve has consistently mentioned that he’s approaching the latter part of his career on a series-to-series basis, and that stance remains unchanged.
“His performance record over 167 matches is outstanding, and leaving the format as a two-time World Cup victor solidifies his place as one of Australia’s great ODI players.”
Smith’s retirement comes as Australia shifts its focus towards the 2027 World Cup, paving the way for new talent to be welcomed into the team.
