Andrew Johns has announced his inclusion in the Kangaroos selection panel, expressing his enthusiasm to “share some thoughts” as they prepare for the upcoming Ashes series at the end of the year.
Considered one of the game’s all-time greats, Johns will join a distinguished group that includes Boyd Cordner, Darren Lockyer, Cameron Smith, and ARLC chairman Peter V’landys.
Though he has not held a full-time coaching role at a high level, Johns has teamed up with various clubs throughout his career and maintained a close relationship with the NSW Blues squad until two years ago.
Many league enthusiasts regard him as the finest halfback in the history of the sport.

In this new role, he will help select the top players to represent the iconic green and gold jersey as they travel to England later this year.
“I’ve been asked to take on the role of selector,” Johns confirmed during an appearance on Nine’s Freddy and The Eighth.
“We have casual discussions, but the core team largely selects itself. [I’ll] introduce some ideas, particularly about younger players I’d like to see given a chance on tour.
“As I watch the game, I pay close attention to how the younger players are performing.

“For a young player to step into camp, be it for Origin or Australia, is a formidable challenge. By bringing them in early, before they’re fully ready, they can acclimatise to the environment and the intensity … it’s all about getting them in and starting from there.”
Johns did mention that the opportunity to become a selector was offered before Mal Meninga’s departure and joked about his uncertainty in navigating the new setup, which is anticipated to be led by his good friend Brad Fittler.

The former Blues coach mentioned that there was “no news” at this point regarding his potential role, despite speculation suggesting an announcement is forthcoming.
Fittler is seen as the leading candidate, whilst Smith has also been discussed as a possible choice to either take the lead or collaborate with the Roosters legend.
“Both of our colleagues at Nine would be ideal – this one here Freddy (Fittler), but also Cameron Smith,” Johns commented.
“I would love to see that dream team come together.”
