Brisbane Roar’s head coach, Ruben Zadkovich, has spotlighted the “beacon of hope” for the Isuzu UTE A-League club this season, emphasising the emergence of “sellable assets” as academy product Lucas Herrington edges closer to an overseas transfer.
This season has posed significant challenges for the Roar, who are set to return to Suncorp Stadium on Tuesday night to face finals-contending Adelaide United, just days after breaking a lengthy winless streak with an unexpected victory over Western United.

After a 410-day winless period at home, Brisbane finally enjoyed a home victory against the Premiership contenders, allowing them to climb off the bottom of the table and overtake fellow strugglers Perth Glory.

Beyond the results, the Roar have successfully introduced young talent Herrington, following Thomas Waddingham’s significant transfer to EFL Championship side Portsmouth in England.
The 17-year-old Herrington, who Zadkovich dubbed the “finest defender in Australian football” earlier this season, has been connected with a potential move to MLS side Colorado Rapids.
Ahead of Brisbane’s clash with seventh-placed Adelaide, Zadkovich remarked to the media: “We’ve been transparent about our goals and one of them is to develop sellable assets for the club.”

“We’ve achieved this with Thomas Waddingham’s progression, and we’re on the verge of doing the same with Lucas Herrington, who is attracting considerable interest. That’s a notable positive.
“The resulting finances will significantly impact the club’s future.”
“I believe there are four or five other sellable assets we’ve developed this season, which is likely something the club didn’t possess last season. That’s truly the shining light.”

Zadkovich indicated that whether Herrington plays in Brisbane’s remaining two fixtures is still to be determined.
When questioned about the likelihood of a transfer to Colorado being imminent, Zadkovich stated: “I don’t want to divulge too much, but there is considerable interest from various clubs, and Colorado is certainly among them.
“It’s essential that it’s the right club, the right move for the player, and an equitable business arrangement for the club.”
“From a footballing perspective, we’ve done our part in progressing Lucas from U23 NPL level to competing against some of the best strikers in the A-League within just 12 months.”
“He’s an immense talent, incredibly coachable, and we’re immensely proud of his progress.”
