Fans of the Dallas Mavericks are facing a tough situation.
In a bold move, the team’s management decided to trade their superstar Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis, aiming to create a powerful duo alongside Kyrie Irving.
However, shortly after this major trade, Davis has been sidelined for an extended period due to injury, and now news has emerged that Kyrie Irving has suffered a torn ACL in his left knee, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
Irving’s injury occurred during the first quarter of Dallas’ 122-98 defeat to the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday (Australian time).
In a heartbreaking moment, Irving made two free throws, tears streaming down his face, before he had to exit the game.
The 32-year-old was fouled by DeMar DeRozan while driving to the basket, landing awkwardly on his left leg after his right foot inadvertently stepped on the foot of Sacramento’s Jonas Valanciunas.

As Irving lost his balance and fell awkwardly, his knee seemed to hyperextend before he collapsed onto the court.
This latest injury marks a significant challenge for a Mavericks team already struggling with numerous setbacks, including the recent loss of 10-time All-Star Davis due to a groin injury on his debut for the Mavericks following the high-profile trade that saw Doncic head to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Meanwhile, Doncic has been finding his stride with the Lakers, contributing to their current push towards the playoffs as they sit in third place in the Western Conference.
Irving was a pivotal factor in the Mavericks’ decision to proceed with the controversial trade, which has left the Dallas fans quite upset.
Now that Irving’s season is cut short, he is likely to be on the mend when teams report for training camp for the 2025-26 season. He has a player option worth $44 million for the upcoming season.

This injury adds a considerable hurdle for the reigning Western Conference champions as they strive to secure a spot in the playoffs. Dallas currently sits in 10th place in the West, which is just enough to enter the play-in tournament.
Irving has made his ninth All-Star appearance this season as an injury replacement, averaging 24.7 points and shooting 40 per cent from beyond the arc.
Davis, who was scheduled to be re-evaluated this week for a potential comeback, is just one of three key players missing from the Mavericks’ squad, joining centres Daniel Gafford (with a sprained knee) and Dereck Lively II (who has a stress fracture in his ankle).
