Manchester United has announced plans to eliminate approximately 150 to 200 jobs as part of new strategies aimed at reversing its financial downturn.
This restructuring initiative follows the removal of 250 positions in the previous year, according to the club’s statement.
“We have experienced financial losses for the past five years consecutively, and this situation is untenable,” CEO Omar Berrada stated.
“Our primary goals as a club are to achieve success on the field for our supporters and to enhance our facilities. However, we cannot commit to these goals while we are consistently operating at a loss.”
“Ultimately, we aim to establish a more streamlined, agile, and financially sustainable club, all while maintaining top-tier service for our important commercial partners. This will position us to make significant investments in both on-field success and improved amenities for fans, in accordance with UEFA and Premier League regulations.”
The club’s aggressive restructuring and cost-cutting measures have intensified since British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe acquired a 25% stake and assumed control of operations, aiming to rejuvenate the club’s performance.
In conjunction with the latest job cuts, Ratcliffe has reportedly shut down the staff canteen at Old Trafford, leaving only fruit available for the remaining employees.
This fresh wave of job losses comes on the heels of around 200 positions cut last year.
Currently, Manchester United is sitting in 16th place in the Premier League standings and is set to face Ipswich Town at their home ground on Wednesday night.
