Sydney Roosters halfback Sam Walker is optimistic that Brandon Smith will honour the final year of his contract with the club before heading to fierce rivals South Sydney in 2026.
The hooker has officially signed a two-year deal with the Rabbitohs starting next season, yet discussions about a potential early transfer continue to circulate.
Smith’s standing at Bondi has dwindled since late last year, with club officials informing him that an extension would not be forthcoming, particularly after Reece Robson was brought in on a lucrative contract.
After being linked to several teams, the 28-year-old chose to join esteemed coach Wayne Bennett at Souths, despite the ongoing rivalry between the two clubs.
Currently, Smith is recovering from a knee injury, and throughout this rehabilitation process, he has been supported by Walker, who was asked if he would like to see the Kiwi international complete his commitments during the latter half of the season with the Roosters.
“Definitely,” Walker responded to 9News Sydney.
“We’re both on the mend from knee injuries, and having someone alongside you during this time is invaluable. I genuinely believe that I wouldn’t be as far along in my recovery without that daily encouragement.”

“It’s obviously a blow to lose Brandon, but it’s also a fantastic opportunity for him to further his career. Right now, we’re both focused on our recoveries from ACL injuries, and he looks really promising.”
“Given his calibre as a player, I hope we can both return by June or July and drive towards the finals this year for the Roosters.”

Sam Walker is keen to have Brandon Smith remain with the Roosters. Nine
Smith initially joined the Roosters in 2023 but has faced challenges with both injuries and performance.
As a former premiership winner with the Storm, many believe this spirited utility forward will rediscover his form under Bennett’s guidance.
Both players are anticipated to return mid-season, which could inject much-needed energy into Trent Robinson’s squad.
