The English Football League (EFL) has formally charged Sheffield Wednesday with several violations of regulations after the club, competing in the second tier, failed to pay its players’ wages punctually.
In the previous two seasons, the club already faced registration embargoes and endured a six-point deduction during the 2020/21 campaign for violating profit and sustainability guidelines.
“Dejphon Chansiri, the owner of Sheffield Wednesday, has also been charged for causing the club to breach EFL regulations, despite his assurances to finance the club’s financial needs,” stated the EFL in a press release on Tuesday.
“The charges pertain to both the Ultimate Beneficial Owner and the club’s failure to meet their obligations to pay players’ wages on time and in full during March and May 2025.”

Thai businessman Chansiri, who has been at the helm of Sheffield Wednesday since 2015, has accepted the charges and expressed his regrets to everyone associated with the club.
“The club is actively working to resolve the outstanding salaries due for May at the earliest opportunity,” it stated.
Sheffield Wednesday and Chansiri have a 14-day window to respond to the allegations.
In the recently concluded season, Sheffield Wednesday secured a 12th-place finish in the Championship.
