Sweden’s supporters were left anxious when their left-wing star, Fridolina Rolfo, exited injured early during the Blagult’s convincing victory over Denmark just over a week ago. Despite being spotted with her leg in a protective boot since then, the Barcelona forward has been named in the Sweden squad for UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, set to kick off next month.
In a media briefing following the squad announcement, head coach Peter Gerhardsson expressed optimism about Rolfo’s potential participation in Switzerland, although he remains uncertain about the extent of the injury.
“We don’t have all the answers yet; it’s a ligament injury, and our medical team will need to assess it themselves.”
“There’s hope, which is why we have included her. We may not have clarity until early next week.”
“Fridolina is an incredibly vital player, so we want to give her this opportunity. We’re committed to doing everything we can to ensure she’s ready for the European Championship,” Gerhardsson added.
Alongside Filippa Angeldahl of Real Madrid and Levante keeper Emma Holmgren, Rolfo is among three Spain-based players in the 23-member squad, with four players competing within Sweden itself.
Eight squad members are currently playing in England, all with London clubs. This includes three players—Amanda Ilestedt, Lina Hurtig, and final goalscorer Stina Blackstenius—who recently triumphed in the UEFA Women’s Champions League with Arsenal.
Sixteen of the selected players were part of the squad that reached the Semi-finals in England three years ago.
Sweden will compete in Group C, starting with a match against Denmark, then facing debutants Poland, and wrapping up their group stage with a game against Germany. The top two from the group will advance to the Quarter-finals.
