Fans of Sweden held their breath when left-wing sensation Fridolina Rolfo departed the field with an injury early in the Blagult’s commanding victory over Denmark just over a week ago. Despite being spotted with her leg in a protective boot since then, the Barcelona star has been included in the Sweden squad for UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, kicking off next month.
In a media briefing following the squad reveal, head coach Peter Gerhardsson expressed cautious optimism regarding Rolfo’s potential participation in Switzerland, although he admitted uncertainty about the injury’s ramifications.
“First and foremost, it’s a ligament injury, so we don’t have all the answers just yet. Our medical team will assess it in detail,” he said.
“There is hope, which is why we’ve included her. We might not have a clearer picture until early next week.”
“Fridolina is a key player for us, and we want to offer her this opportunity. We’ll put in the effort to ensure she’s ready for the European Championship,” Gerhardsson continued.
Joining Filippa Angeldahl from Real Madrid and Levante goalkeeper Emma Holmgren, Rolfo is one of three players based in Spain among the 23 selected for the squad, while four players are from Sweden.
Eight of the squad members play in England — all for London clubs — including three who lifted the UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy last month with Arsenal: Amanda Ilestedt, Lina Hurtig, and final goalscorer Stina Blackstenius.
Notably, 16 players in the current squad were part of the group that reached the semi-finals in England three years ago.
Sweden will compete in Group C, starting with a match against Denmark, followed by a showdown with debutants Poland, and concluding their group stage against Germany. The top two teams will progress to the quarter-finals.
