This Sunday, Brøndby attacking midfielder Mathias Kvistgaarden will transition from the senior Danish squad to the Under-21 team in preparation for the Under-21 European Championships.
Having made a significant impact on the senior national side, it is logical to ensure he is well-prepared for the upcoming tournament, stated Danish national team coach Brian Riemer.
“I have been incredibly pleased with Kvistgaarden’s contributions during our camp this week. This includes all the training sessions, as well as his performance on Saturday against Northern Ireland, where he showcased remarkable talent in just half an hour on the pitch.”
“He has demonstrated the qualities we are looking for in the national team. Thus, I believe he has fulfilled my expectations.”
“He has successfully passed the assessment, making it sensible for him to accompany the Under-21 national team to prepare thoroughly. My hope is that he will participate in three exciting group matches – and potentially more – at the Under-21 European Championships,” added Brian Riemer.
Just moments after his substitution, Kvistgaarden played a crucial role in Denmark’s winning goal against Northern Ireland.
Riemer has no intention of filling Kvistgaarden’s spot in the senior team with another player.
Full-back Anton Gaaei will also head to the Under-21 European Championships, but he will stay with the senior team for Tuesday’s friendly against Lithuania, where he could earn his first cap.
“With only seven defenders in the entire squad, I must ensure that while we aim to support the Under-21 national team, we adequately represent the A national team. Therefore, Gaaei won’t depart for the Under-21 European Championships until Wednesday morning,” Riemer explained.
Despite this, he did not guarantee Gaaei a debut against Lithuania.
“It hasn’t been decided yet whether he will debut against Lithuania, but there is a chance he could head to the Under-21 European Championships right after making his debut with us,”
Riemer stated.
Denmark is set to kick off their campaign in the Under-21 European Championships on Thursday.
