This Sunday, Mathias Kvistgaarden, the attacking midfielder from Brøndby, will depart from the Danish senior squad to join the Under-21 team participating in the Under-21 European Championships.
Kvistgaarden has made a notable impact on the senior national team, prompting Danish national team coach Brian Riemer to ensure he receives optimal preparation for the upcoming tournament.
“I have been delighted with Kvistgaarden’s performance during the camp this week. This includes all training sessions and his show on Saturday against Northern Ireland, where he left a strong impression in just half an hour,” Riemer noted.
“He demonstrated the qualities we want in the national side, leading me to conclude that he has met my expectations.”
“He has successfully passed the test, making it sensible for him to join the Under-21 national team and prepare thoroughly, with the hope of featuring in three, and ideally more, group matches at the Under-21 European Championships,” added Riemer.
Just moments after his substitution, Kvistgaarden played a role in Denmark’s winning goal against Northern Ireland.
Interestingly, Riemer has chosen not to replace Kvistgaarden in the senior squad.
Full-back Anton Gaaei is also set to compete in the Under-21 European Championships but will remain with the A national team for Tuesday’s friendly against Lithuania, where he may earn his first cap.
“We only have seven defenders in total in the squad, so while we want to assist the Under-21 team, we must ensure the A national team is adequately represented. Anton won’t depart for the Under-21 European Championships until Wednesday morning,” stated Riemer.
However, he didn’t guarantee Gaaei a debut against Lithuania.
“It hasn’t been decided yet whether he will debut against Lithuania, but there is a chance he will travel to the Under-21 European Championships after his first appearance with the senior national team,”
Riemer continued.
Denmark’s first match in the Under-21 European Championships is scheduled for Thursday.
