On a night filled with mixed emotions, Carlton supporters celebrated a thrilling 15-point victory over St Kilda at the MCG on Friday, though the team’s injury woes continued to escalate.
The match was clinched for the Blues when Harry McKay converted a set shot from roughly 45 metres out, just inside the right boundary, with under 90 seconds remaining. This marked McKay’s third goal of the evening and secured a final score of 11.11 (77) to 9.8 (62).
Charlie Curnow, Carlton’s other star Coleman Medallist, also contributed with three goals as the Blues improved their season record to 4-5.
However, the victory was overshadowed by several injuries, most notably Mitch McGovern, who was hospitalised following a fierce collision in the first quarter. Blake Acres suffered a dislocated shoulder, while Lachie Cowan dealt with hamstring tightness, and Nick Haynes sustained a head knock.
Acres had his shoulder reset during the second quarter and continued to play, while Haynes was able to return to the field after receiving treatment for his head injury. In contrast, Cowan did not participate in the second half due to his hamstring issues.
