Real Madrid may find themselves without defender David Alaba and midfielder Eduardo Camavinga for the upcoming Copa del Rey final, as both players sustained injuries during Wednesday’s narrow 1-0 victory over Getafe in LaLiga.
A first-half goal from Turkish midfielder Arda Güler secured the essential win for Real, keeping their hopes of clinching the LaLiga title alive.
However, this victory came at a price, with coach Carlo Ancelotti facing increased pressure as he already misses key players Kylian Mbappe and Ferland Mendy ahead of Saturday’s Copa del Rey clash against their arch-rivals, Barcelona.
“We’ll assess the situation tomorrow after the medical evaluations, but (Alaba and Camavinga) both sustained muscle injuries in their legs, so it seems quite doubtful they will participate in Saturday’s final,” Ancelotti stated during the post-match press conference.
With Mendy, Alaba, and Camavinga all potentially sidelined, Ancelotti might need to lean on Fran Garcia to step into the left-back role, where he’ll have the challenging task of neutralising Barcelona’s 17-year-old wonderkid, Lamine Yamal.
Barcelona, who are aiming for a treble this season and face Inter Milan in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final next week, are currently leading LaLiga with 76 points, four clear of Real, with just five games left in the season.
This season has already seen Barcelona deliver decisive wins over Real, including a 4-0 thrashing at Santiago Bernabeu in October and a 5-2 victory in the Spanish Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia back in January.
“There may be a favourite, but a final is a final. Anything can happen,” Ancelotti remarked. “We will need to defend effectively, yet we’ll have our opportunities to attack. Today’s win has given us a nice boost. The first half was strong, though it was more challenging towards the end, but we secured the victory.”
