Socceroos head coach Tony Popovic has expressed the team’s ambition to achieve “something special” as they celebrate qualifying for their sixth consecutive World Cup.
The Socceroos secured their place in North America next year with a 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia in Jeddah on Tuesday, joining Japan from Asian Group C and sending the home side back to the qualifiers.
“I’m feeling very satisfied at the moment. I’m sure it will become more meaningful as the days pass,” stated Popovic, who has now reached the World Cup as both a player and a coach, joining a select few.
The former captain of Crystal Palace participated in the 2006 tournament held in Germany, where Australia advanced to the round of 16 under the guidance of Guus Hiddink.
“It’s been an incredibly intense period since I took over, and I’ve genuinely enjoyed every moment,” Popovic noted, having stepped in for Graham Arnold in September.
“We’ve accomplished the first goal of automatically qualifying and the next step is to aim higher for the World Cup.“
This marks Australia’s sixth consecutive World Cup appearance, and notably, it is the first time in 12 years that they have qualified without needing to go through the playoffs.
When Popovic took over, Australia was in a precarious fifth position in the group, suffering a disheartening 1-0 defeat to Bahrain and a goalless draw against Indonesia.
After conceding an early goal in Jeddah, Mitch Duke assisted Connor Metcalfe before scoring the crucial winner, while veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan made headlines by saving a penalty, igniting massive celebrations.
“I believe this resilience has been a hallmark since my arrival. In my first match, we went one-nil down to China and managed to turn it around,” Popovic recalled, referencing his initial game in charge after Arnold’s departure.
“To achieve this in such an intense atmosphere, particularly with the challenging weather conditions, showcases our character and quality. I’m absolutely delighted with how we managed to come back, take the lead, and win the match.
“We’ve established a strong foundation, and now we’re eager to enhance our performance and aim for something special at the World Cup.“
For captain Ryan, this moment was particularly significant. Not only did he save the penalty during his 100th appearance for Australia, but he also secured his spot for a fourth World Cup.
“The fairytale has come true,” said the 33-year-old, currently playing for French club Lens.
“I’m immensely proud of everyone involved in this journey to reach here.
“We’ll take time to celebrate this direct qualification, but in a week or so, our preparations will commence for the next target we’ve set for ourselves.
