Phil Gould has voiced his concern that the Sydney Roosters’ interest in Daly Cherry-Evans might hinder Sam Walker’s growth, as speculation swirls regarding the future of the Manly halfback.
Since he confirmed his exit from Manly, there have been few hints about Cherry-Evans’ next destination, although the Roosters have acknowledged their interest, with the Dolphins also in pursuit.
With the untested halves combination of Sam Walker and Sandon Smith, much of the talk around Cherry-Evans centres on the Roosters potentially mirroring their previous acquisition of Cooper Cronk towards the end of his illustrious career.
Yet, Gould suggests that recruiting Cherry-Evans would negatively impact Walker’s development.

“I struggle to comprehend why the Roosters are even considering Daly Cherry-Evans when they’ve backed Sam Walker as their long-term No.7,” he remarked on Nine’s 100% Footy. “Are they really willing to sideline his growth for a couple of years?”
“If Cherry-Evans were to join, he’s not coming in as a five-eighth. He’d be the starting halfback, and honestly, I don’t believe he’ll be heading there. I doubt he’s even under consideration.”

“It’s baffling to consider that the Roosters would risk Sam Walker’s development by introducing Cherry-Evans into the equation and placing him in a position to take over for two years,” he added.
“The investment in Sam Walker was intended to ensure he could emerge as the long-term halfback, taking charge of the team as senior players depart.”
Gould labelled a potential Cherry-Evans signing as a “knee-jerk reaction” from the Roosters.
“Sam Walker has completed his apprenticeship and is approaching the crucial phase of his career where he must lead the team. The Roosters need to show patience in this process,” he stressed.
While Paul Gallen suggested that the Roosters seldom embark on rebuilding phases and that signing Cherry-Evans would inhibit that, Gould countered, stating, “They need to embrace the challenge and face it head-on.”
