PSV Eindhoven’s manager, Peter Bosz, has expressed his determination to reverse the fortunes of the Dutch champions following an abysmal week that culminated in a staggering defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday.
The team suffered a humiliating 7-1 loss at home in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash with the English side, marking the first occasion PSV has conceded seven goals in a match and also making them the first Dutch club to do so in a European competition.
This crushing defeat came on the heels of PSV relinquishing their impressive 56-match unbeaten home streak the previous Wednesday, when they faced an unexpected defeat to Go Ahead Eagles in the semi-finals of the Dutch Cup.
They then fell to the same team again in the league over the weekend, now trailing Ajax by eight points in the battle for the domestic title.
“I am committed to getting things back on track,” Bosz affirmed to reporters following the thrashing at the Philips Stadion.
“We need to work collectively to overcome this challenge. We’ve proven we can rise to the occasion, as we did against Juventus and Feyenoord in the cup.”
PSV had previously claimed victory over the Italian heavyweights in the last round of the Champions League, but were completely outclassed by Arsenal.
“It was devastating. Humiliating. We stood no chance. We were thoroughly outplayed. It was disappointing to face such a strong opponent during this tough phase,” Bosz reflected.
“A quick look at the goals we conceded reveals that we must improve our defensive efforts.”
Yet, he suggested that the match could have taken a different turn.
“There were a couple of pivotal moments that might have changed the game. At 0-0, we struck the crossbar. Additionally, they had a player who could have been shown a second yellow card.”
Arsenal’s full-back, Myles Lewis-Skelly, who was cautioned early in the match, escaped a second yellow card for a reckless tackle while Arsenal led 2-0.
PSV will host Heerenveen in the Dutch league this Saturday before travelling to London for the return leg against Arsenal next Wednesday.
